The state dates back to the 13th century with the unification and subjugation of the several independent Middle Anglic-speaking polities of Northern Goidelia under the independent Duchy of Haukvirth. Following the House Wars and Goidelic Campaign of the 14th century—during which Haukvirth was formally neutral but de facto aligned with the Tipslan-Idlerein bloc—Haukvirth was integrated into the Tiperyn Realm as a member of the tripartite dominating the subcontinent. Haukvirth's integration into the Realm saw the transfer of what is now the Alahaven peninsula to it from Zoervoud as reparation for the latter's opposition to Tipslan during the House Wars. This alliance's control of Tiperyn solidified following the Dukes' Rebellion (1389-1393) and the Apostolicization of the Realm in the 15th century.
Haukvirth maintains special status as a co-equal state with the Grand Duchy of Tipslan, the seat of the Empress of Tiperyn. This status originates in the 14th century when Haukvirth was an separate ally of Tipslan and Idlerein during the Tiperyn Realm's early post-unification wars. Haukvirth status gives it significant self-governance beyond the typical confederal powers of a Tiperyn state and administrative authority over the Anglic-speaking Principality of Spencton. It and Spencton are the only states within Tiperyn to conduct business in Anglic rather than Tipsprek, and Haukvirth's aristocracy secured Anglic as a legal national language on par with Tipsprek (as opposed to regional languages like Channel Insennian spoken in Grootshaven and Kanaalbaken that lack national recognition). Historically the Duchess of Haukvirth has been the only provincial monarch to be granted administrative authority over an overseas territory. For example, before the consolidation of Tiperyn's Southern Avalonian colonial holdings in the 19th century and formalization of the Federal Governor system, the Realm City of Chimchag as an Anglic-speaking colony had its mayor appointed by the Duchess of Haukvirth rather than the Empress. All other overseas territories had their colonial administrations and governorships appointed directly by the national monarch.
Haukvirth is broadly known for its manufacturing and lumbering industries, being the home of large manufacturing cities like Haukvirth, Alahaven, and Nottingford as well as large swaths of boreal forest in its northern interior. The state is considered Tiperyn's aerospace capital, hosting the headquarters of enterprises such as Ares Aerospace and Realm Airways founded by the Haukvirther Myerscough family.
